If you have a parcel promo code, choose the packaging before comparing quotes with and without it. If those quotes use different boxes or services, the difference does not show what the code saved. This guide offers no live codes. It explains how to compare shipping quotes, using CDEK's Russian services and a separate DHL Express example.
Identify the service before comparing discounts
CDEK's Posylochka page links the price to the route and box size. The box is included, but protective wrapping for fragile contents costs extra. An included box therefore does not mean every part of preparing a parcel is free. Check the particular service rather than relying on the carrier's name.
CDEK's list of services for individuals also describes a different pricing model: its Profi service depends on weight and dimensions. Identical contents do not make quotes for different services interchangeable. A box-based service's rules should not be applied to every delivery option that company offers.
Record the service name, origin, destination, drop-off method and delivery method. If you need a courier, comparing that option with collection at a pickup point is not a pure test of a promo code. Decide whether the underlying service meets your needs before considering its promotion.
A light item can still occupy substantial space
Volumetric weight illustrates a different pricing principle. DHL Express's UK guidance calculates it as length multiplied by width and height in centimetres, divided by 5,000. The greater of actual and volumetric weight is used for charging. This is the DHL Express model described there, not a formula for every CDEK service.
Using that formula, a hypothetical 40 x 30 x 20 cm box has a volumetric weight of 4.8 kg. If it actually weighs 2 kg, the pricing weight would be 4.8 kg. The shipment's monetary cost still depends on the applicable rates.
Measure the packed parcel, not just its contents
Prepare the contents for shipping before comparing options, and check the dimensions of the chosen outer packaging. Product measurements do not describe a box with protective material around it. If staff choose the packaging at a drop-off point, confirm its size and obtain a quote for that version.
Do not remove necessary protection from a fragile item to reach a preferred calculator result. Find out which packaging suits the contents and which services are included. A discount and adequate protection solve different problems; one should not stand in for the other.
Compare two prices for the same shipment
- Keep the route, service, delivery method, packed weight and outer dimensions unchanged.
- List packaging and additional services separately. Are they included in the quoted amount?
- Read the particular code's conditions: which service, booking channel and sender are eligible? The carrier's name alone does not answer those questions.
- Compare the total without the new code and with it, using the same shipment details. Start again if the box or service changes.
- Ask the carrier to explain unclear charges before confirming, and retain the breakdown without posting addresses or tracking numbers publicly.
If an online estimate differs from the amount quoted at drop-off, ask which measurements and services were used. Incorrect dimensions, a different service and a code that was not applied call for different responses. The difference alone establishes neither deception nor a successful discount.
Keep a quote for the box you will actually send, and check whether it includes the protective wrapping your contents need. Use that same parcel and service when comparing the quote with a promo code. Otherwise, the two totals do not answer the same question.
