You check a grocery promo code in the cart, but someone picks the groceries later. An unavailable item or a substitution can separate those two versions of the order. What should you check when a discount shown at checkout is missing from the completed purchase? Start with the items, not another attempt at entering the code. This guide uses published Instacart and UK Tesco policies to examine that risk. It provides no live codes and does not claim that their rules apply to other retailers or countries.
Two ways picking can affect a discount
Instacart distinguishes an item coupon from an order promotion with minimum spend. The former does not discount an ineligible replacement. The latter can drop off when replacements or item refunds bring the total below its threshold. These are Instacart policies, not universal grocery rules.
Check both dependencies in your offer: products and spend. Keep its terms alongside the initial item list; similar packaging does not establish a replacement's eligibility.
Fewer items can mean a higher payment: an invented example
Suppose a hypothetical offer takes 400 roubles off at least 2,000 roubles of qualifying groceries. The cart contains 2,050, producing a displayed payment of 1,650. Assume the threshold is assessed against the picked items before that discount, and exclude delivery and other charges for simplicity. The currency is just a unit for this calculation: these are not an Instacart, Tesco or Russian retailer's promotion terms.
An item priced at 150 cannot be supplied, and the customer agrees to receive the order without it. Qualifying groceries now total 1,900. If that removes eligibility for the 400 discount, the payment becomes 1,900, which is 250 above the original 1,650. The change combines 150 less in goods with the loss of a 400 discount. It is not a price increase on the remaining products.
The arithmetic does not establish that a retailer made an error or that any actual charge was justified. It shows why two totals without their item lists are an incomplete comparison. Investigate the value of the item changes separately from the discount. If the offer does not explain when minimum spend is assessed, ask support before placing an order you already need rather than making a test purchase.
A substitution preference is a purchasing decision
A separate Instacart guide describes shopper-selected replacements, customer-specified alternatives and a refund instead of a replacement. Instructions carry into future orders, and replacement price differences affect the calculation. Review a saved preference when it no longer fits. These are Instacart's options, not navigation instructions for another retailer's app.
First decide whether the replacement's ingredients and quantity suit you, then assess the discount. Neither accepting an unwanted substitute to preserve a threshold nor declining it automatically ensures a good purchase.
Retailers handle replacement prices differently
UK Tesco's help page promises the original price for a more expensive ordinary substitute. The exception is a multi-buy offer or meal deal: a pricier replacement can increase the deal's price, and customers may refuse all its items for a refund. These are Tesco's terms, not a general refund right in Russia.
Establish whether the replacement is sold separately or within a deal. If its notification lacks price and eligibility details, ask your retailer for them.
What to check before picking and after delivery
- Before checkout, retain the offer terms, item list, discount and total. Establish which contents and which stage are used to assess minimum spend.
- Review the substitution options available to you. For important items, decide on an acceptable alternative or no replacement; do not let a spend threshold redefine what you need.
- For a proposed replacement, compare product, quantity, price and eligibility. Missing information means the discount's survival is unverified.
- For a purchase you already planned, compare delivered items and the order breakdown with your original record. Ask support about item changes and promotional recalculation as separate issues.
A discount in the initial cart and one on the picked grocery order are not necessarily the same result. Retain both versions of the contents and read your offer's recalculation terms. A code directory or cart snapshot does not establish stock availability during picking or guarantee that later substitutions will preserve a discount.
